Just asking.
John 13: 36-38 "Simon Peter said to Him "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered [him], "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later." Peter said to Him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock willnot crow before you deny me three times."
Later:
John 16:5 "But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you asked me, 'Where are you going?'"
Uh, Jesus...Simon Peter asked you a couple of chapters ago....and where exactly were you guys for chapter 15 and 16 and 17? We know that you already "left the building." And of all gospels, why no words of institution during the Last Supper -- particularly after John 6. The most curious of omissions ever.
I still want to know if the Blessed Vigin Mary had Passover dinner with the Finkelsteins that night.

LOL! too funny
Well, ya gotta wonder! :-D
Seriously, though -- I think chapters 15-17 seem awfully tacked in. 15-16 could be almost something He told them after the resurrection. But for such a long "Last supper discourse" [although from where they place 15-17, it's clearly after they left the last supper, but before the arrest, it's odd that John doesn't have the words of institution.
But clearly, as the scholar's say, hte Gospel of John is a more highly developed gospel.
John 21:25
Oh, yes...no worries along that line -- It's just an odd omission!
I guess I am wondering what you think is being "omitted" here? Do you believe that the Holy Spirit would allow anything that needed to be in the Bible not to be in the Bible? Just wondering... Let me know http://www.kevinspeaks.com or kevin@kevinspeaks.com Thanks.
Kevin, relax, son, it's a joke.
It's simply a bit odd that the words of institution at the last supper were left out of the gospel of John! It's clear that the gospel of John promotes the real presence in the Eucharist given the discourse in John 6! Just odd that the synoptics coer that part of the last supper but John leaves itout!
What do you believe to be so odd? The Gospels are each written, not to beat a dead horse with the same info, but to reach different audiences. You only get a complete view of the Good News after you have compiled all of the above. The people that the Gospel of John was written for didn't necessarily care so much about that subject. Let me ask you a question. For who's benefit do you believe it was for that he feed them?
No. I think St John was having a "senior moment". His WAS the last Gospel and he was getting on in years. I have long been struck by the amazing contrasts in it between the very lucid narratives - like the Passion- and the long discourses where I am likely to fall asleep.
Kevin, of course the Gospel was tailored to different audiences. John in particular is special because it is a highly developed theology.
OF COURSE the people John was taliored to were highly concerned with what was done at the last supper -- especially given the lengthy treatment in John 6. "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no life within you!" Well, Jews didn't do that. The word "eat" used in John 6, is moreover is akin to the word "gnaw." It's not a "sumbol." THREE TImeS He is asked to clarify Himself as in "do we misunderstand you?" This is the one recorded incident where disciples leave Him over an issue. In fact at the end of that chapter, it is heavily implied that Judas did not believe this teaching, but the others did. Which would give Judas his motivation for leaving the fold.
And why did Jesus feed them? So they could have eternal life. Paul also reinforces belief in the Real Presence in 1 Cor 11:27-32 The passage would make no sense if one's simply chowing down on homemade bread with their buddies.
Patricius, no don't think so. It was the last gospel, granted about 90AD, give or take, I am really simply pointing out and concurring with the belief that this gospel had more than one source. Doesn't negate that the teaching is from John at all. "Authorship" was conceptially differeent back then.
I.E. the "Gospel of John" contains things which John taught. There are somem really good bible commentaries out there. I especially like the New Jerome Bible Commentar.
Oh, and there's also the "fun" part somewhere where one of the gospels has Jesus misquoting scripture. :-D Definitely a "senior moment!"
I sort of thought the title of this post was offensive, personally.
Anon: No..."offensive" would have been "Proof positive - Jesus had ADHD?"
The way I worded it is called "an attention getter." :-D
In fact, 16:5 says "none of you is asking me" (present tense in the Greek). 13:36 and 16:5 are different moments in the proceedings, and I think John expects us to take each in its own context and not worry about it.
Surely it's St Peter with the ADHD? He leaves his boat to follow Jesus without any thought for the consequences. Blurts out nonsense about building tents during the Transfiguration. Hops out of a boat to try to walk on open seas. Chops off a soldier's ear. Makes rash promises about never leaving Our Lord. Denies him three times. Runs inside a mashed up looking tomb.....
