Too bad Fr. Sean missed it....

There was a 5.4 earthquake in SoCal today in the Chino Hills area near LA. I really got cheated because I was in Old Town, in San Diego when it happened, and due to the loose soil in that area they don't feel it as much in this particular square mile or two. But my friend sitting over at MCRD, just a relatively short distance away felt it shake their building pretty good. I'd been sorry that we hadn't been able to lay out the "Earthquake Experience" for Fr. Sean when he was out here a few weeks ago. (Hey, Fr. Sean, a 5.4 would have felt roughly like the Sea World arctic ride we went on, probably less exciting.)

Digihairshirt related that a duck and cower cover was in order in her office, and in Cali fashion everyone guessed it was in the 5 pointer range. It was so.

Elsewhere in SoCal, Diane, et al were grooving to the experience....

I had exactly two very MILD experiences during my 9 years in CA - one at USMCAS Tustin (shaky) in 1994, the other in my office in the Mr. A's building, which rolled me about 4 inches forward in my chair, in 1999. Both were "minor." Enough for me to say to myself "yeah, gotta get outta here before the next big one hits. Sheesh. Can't imagine this will do much for the SoCal housing market.

Hmmmm....come to think of it, maybe I'll move back!

See the reaction? We have a LOT more to fear from brush fire season!

Totally, I was talking to a man in the midwest the other day ... and he told me that my phone call was the FIRST one they'd received in a while, so they were glad the phone was back on. A flood or tornado hits and they're messed up for weeks. Unless it's over 6, we might have to straighten a few pictures out, or some hapless toad had an older house with a brick chimney that had "issues." These people cower in their bathroom for hours, and we take a 10 minute break and email all our friends. "So, dude, what's your guestimate?"

Re: the earthquake - it was slightly amusing, yesterday, to see the news networks, for about half an hour, throw all their resources at what they thought was a huge story, only to be greeted by a giant shrug from the Californians they interviewed.

I experienced two while I lived in WA, all in the 5 range. Quite an experience for someone used to tornados!

First experience: Hubby had just had a "roto rooter" surgery and was sitting on the couch with a catheter attached. Earthquake hits and I run to the nearest door frame and begin yelling at him to get off the couch because it is under a huge plate glass window. Hubby, as gingerly as possible, gets himself off the couch and ambles over in front of our huge entertainment center. I'm yelling at him again to move because the entertainment center isn't attached to the wall and could fall on him. Hubby just looks at me like he would rather die than have to move around much more!

Thanks Esther, Swissmiss, Stephen and Kit (and of course digi who actually did get mildly affected because she probably got a good 10 minute coffee break out of it!)

If I had to pick my poison it would be earthquake every time. FIRE is my worst fear.!
