You Should Be Here

...eventually! If you are from the Americas, you should aspire to have your likeness in the lower right hand corner. This is a photograph of a painting above a side altar in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in downtown Sacramento. "They" have reserved a spot for you. When I was in my teens I had happened across a little book called "You are called to Sainthood." [Or something like that!] This altar piece is an unintentional reminder that we should all have this aspiration, no matter what our everyday calling is.

What an excellent idea- the blank space, and it is a beautiful painting.

What a great idea. It reminds me of the gold altar piece behind the high altar of S Mark's, Basilica, Venice. It was "liberated" from Constantinople during the infamous Fourth Crusade. One of the lower range of saints, gazing heaven-ward towards the Pantocrator, was changed by the Venetians into the then Doge of Venice. We know this happened, apparently, because the Doge in the image is wearing red socks, which signify sanctity in the art of that period. It appears that no Doge was holy enough to warrant red socks - ergo, the saint's head must have been replaced with the Doge's. Don't you just love it!

If you're really egotistical (or should I say aspirational?) you can photoshop your own picutre in there as a "reminder" to yourself!)
