We don't get many skies like this
but we did yesterday afternoon. Usually, here when there are dark clouds, it often doesn't rain ... and you can say "anywhere else but here, and this would be a rain cloud for sure." When we DO get some real rain clouds, they're not usually accompanied by a lot of little white alto clouds. That's a REAL rain cloud splashed across the bottom of the photo and for a little while a significant portion of the sky was filled with row on row of little clouds. For those of you who've been praying for us to get some rain after all the fires in October, I thank you. December has had a pretty good sprinkling. There's actually bright green stuff growing on my lawn. The light is almost the purest in December after a rain.

Those look like altocumulus clouds. If they are present early in the day and it is humid you may get rain later in the day.
Nice picture.
It's too cold here...
The clouds are awesome. Yesterday, I picked my daughter up from the airport--the moment we were walking out to the car a big storm came in--and it was rush hour traffic--it took us two hours to get home when it's usually 45 minutes. And today I shoveled snow for and hour and 15 min. Utah snow--beautiful, but only for the skiing.
Adrienne, it's very seldom humid here. Aha- altoCUMULUS. The ones I can recognize for sure are the cumulonimbus and the cirrus, and the altos at @1000 feet, but the others I always have to look up. I'm reaching back for my 4th or 5th grade general science knowledge! I remember when we were doing the "weather" unit at school then, one of our classmate's father was an airline pilot. He paid a visit during our science class and gave a little talk about how important the weather was to all sorts of people yada-yada. The one chief thing I remember him doing was pointing out that they had mislabeled some of the clouds in our science book! What that taught me was "just because it's written here in this book doesn't mean it's a guarantee that it's always right." Probably the most important lesson of the day!
Ah, c'mon, Jackie...it can't be *that* cold there...your forcast for Saturday said you were supposed to have a low of 30 and a high of around 48...that should be "balmy" this time of year for you! ;-D
[Karen doesn't "do" Celsius.]
Tara: I loved snow as a child, Iove looking at snow as an adult. I'm just glad not to have to shovel it.
