Our choir, for the first time ever, is going to have a joint "Lessons and Carols" service on Saturday, Dec. 15 with the added strength of an adjacent parish. It will start at 3 p.m., followed by a little reception, then Sat. vigil Mass - so if you're in Old Town in San Diego, drop by. [Capisce, Digi & AA?]
I've often had "Lessons and Carols envy" for these delightful services put on by our Anglican friends. I hope it goes well. I was unaware of such things until about 15-20 years ago when I ran across a Video tape of a "Lessons and Carols Service" by King's Choir, Cambridge. The video had the 9 lessons and Carols, and also had a nice segment about the school where choir boys are trained.
The English have a traditional song "Once in Royal David's City" that is quite unknown to the average American - (odd, because there are other British Carols well known in these parts, but not that one.) Is that song often done in English *Catholic* churches too?

I've played music since I've been 8, and that one's a fairly simple arrangement to play - but unless I KNOW, it could take me a good couple of minutes to figure that out. Duh.]

Line from Angels we have Heard on High. My favorite Christmas Hymn. I simply don't know how we missed getting Once in Royal David's City from you. We know Ding-Dong Merrily on High, and I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In and a raft of others..one of my favorites being "WE wish you a Merry Christmas" figgy pudding and all. Though in real life I wouldn't touch figgy anything (other than fig newtons) with a 10 foot barge pole.

I used to play Once in Royal David's City on the organ and flute (back when I could play) but haven't heard Ding-Dong Merrily on High around much. I Saw Three Ships, yep. The simple pleasures of the Christmas season!
Swiss, grant you, Ding=dong isn't heard as often as we would wish, but That also has a great "Gloria" in it, I wish they would do it more often. I've not heard it IN church, but done in performance. Another not done a lot over hear but heard is "The Holly and the Ivy."

Gem, sadly I must decline as that is the Annual Richer Family Christmas Tree Buying and Decorating It Day, along with dinner later that evening with my priest and his family.
However, I would like to take the opportunity - as I usually do during the Christmas holidays - to pop on down to Old Town. If I do so on a Saturday, what time is the Vigil Mass?
Digi- I always assist at the 5:15 on Sunday night - I'll be easy to spot. As I'll be doing the readings (and hopefully not chasing down people walking away with the Host rather than consuming it.) I hope our servers are on their best behavior for you. DO come by the sacristy and say "hey" - we can go out for drinkies or whatever after if you guys have the time. It's the only catholic church in s Old Town and it's named (sssht!) after the patron Saint of the United States.
