Devotion Meme

Esther tagged me to name 5 favorite devotions - Mass is NOT to be included - and then tag 5 other people and let them know they've been tagged, and then give the person you tagged a link back to the post you've completed.

1. Benediction - my favorite since incense first hit my nose
2. Adoration - nothing is more peaceful than planting yourself in front of a tabernacle with the exposed Eucharist
3. Rosary - because
4. Stations - I do these more in Lent, but still
5. Centering Prayer - [ha-ha, GOTCHA, you didn't really think I'd do something as daft as "centering prayer" did you?] No, really for number 5:
Lighting a Candle or two or three, and giving an on-the-fly intention request to St. Michael, St. Jude, St. Anne, St. Therese, or St. Anthony, or the BVM to take it upstairs for me on speed dial request line.

I tag - Digi, Dominic Mary, Tara, Mum of 6, and Packrat.

Prayer Meme

We haven't been doing memes in a while, so Mac thought this one up, and tagged Dominic Mary who tagged me.

The rules, (from Mac) which need to be posted: "Name your three most favorite prayers, and explain why they're your favorites. Then tag five bloggers - give them a link, and then go and tell them they have been tagged. Finally, tell the person who tagged you that you've completed the meme... The Liturgy and the Sacraments are off limits here. I'm more interested in people's favorite devotional prayers."

1.) Hail Mary: THE "go to" prayer. Especially good for the REALLY big stuff of the "my aunt got hit by a car and is in dire need of help" to "the quarterback never saw the hit coming and his knee might finally be trashed forever please don't let him be crippled for life" -- she is also especially good at things like "I need to find a restroom quickly or be as embarrassed as all get out." Even if you are the king, you listen to your mother. If anyone will get the attention of Jesus, it is His mother.

2.) Prayer to St. Michael: I have particularly liked it lately. I say it a few times a day now...just because of Obama and the evil stuff he and his crew are constantly pulling. There is NO prayer that ends with quite the bang this one does of righteous indignation about people getting what's coming to them if they don't have a "come to Jesus" meeting. "...by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits [i.e. Obama and company] who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

3) Hail Holy Queen: Right after the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be, this is the one my mother taught me. We said these four prayers in order when I was tiny and I used to kneel ON the bed when I was two. Mother didn't want me in my jammies, getting any dirt from the floor onto the bed so she had me kneel there. In THOSE days there wasn't wall to wall carpeting everywhere. I liked the fact that she DIDN'T try to explain it to me, but as time went on it revealed its richness to me and the words weren't "dumbed down." From earliest childhood the word "Christ" for some reason has always been associated in my mind with a piece of hot buttered toast. Perhaps I thought that this fellow "Christ" was obviously someone important, kind, and all powerful...which gave me the same warm all over feeling, not unlike having a piece of hot buttered toast when all is right with the world. Whatever. I've always found it wonderful because of the warm childhood memories of saying this with my mother AND it's a great prayer when contemplating an on-going issue that takes lots of prayer.

7 things I'd like to see happen

Mac tagged me on this:

"What are the seven things that we, as Catholics, want or would like to see happen?"

Here goes:

1) If someone like, oh, say a Kennedy should die, their entire horrid pro-abortion clan doesn't trot up to Communion. If they disagree with the church they should have the guts and integrity to admit they've lost the faith. If a priest knowingly gives Communion to someone like B. Hussein Obama or Nancy Pelosi or the entire horrid pro-abortion Kennedy clan, the bishop MUST suspend faculties of the priest. IF the bishop doesn't do HIS job, the pope retires the bishop to count the holes in the accoustical tile of the lowest catacomb. It's a scandal, and high time it stopped.

2) Just once, I'd like to see some priest who does the EF form of Mass give a girl or woman a shot at serving the Mass to prove to me that the EF isn't a museum piece locked into 1962. Minor orders are gone, and frankly, it was a silly term for the functions they performed. Holy Orders are actual sacraments, those 4 functions weren't -- and east/west couldn't make up their minds regards the sub-deacon, then playing "All boys club" for serving should stop. There's ONE set of canon law rules, and they should apply to the EF form too, frankly. If the server represents "the people" it's high time to realize that 50% of "the people" are women and a woman/or girl can represent the body of pew sitters as well as a guy can. Why should the boys be taught the latin with great care, when the girls get invited to iron the altar cloths? Feh. Who wants to do "holy housework" at 9? Ironing the cloths is important, and necessary, but not something you want to do at age 9.

3) Oh, and can we quit with the "silent canon." I want to hear what the priest says. Might be nice in preference to: barking dogs, lawn mowers, fog horns, crying children, and ice-cream trucks that go "ding-a-ling-a-ling." And the choir should SHADDUP too. These singing yahoos over the centuries were one of the reasons the priests became mute during the canon. Do your bit, and stop riding over every thing. I'm following what the priest is doing, not listening to a concert. And in a high mass: Face us for the epistle and gospel, Okay? Not to some mythical barbarian to the north. If you want to face barbarians, look at the people, or SOUTH for that matter, those Muslims hordes are out to overrun us all.

4) Re: Catholic education. Revamp the whole thing so students have a clue other than simple simon stuff. They have NO idea how to defend the faith.

5) Stop waiting so long to give confirmation. DO NOT MAKE THEM JUMP THROUGH HOOPS! NO SERVICE PROJECTS. It's a sacrament. Let the grace work. [Pet peeve. They WAIT until the kids are old enough to get "busy-busy." 16-18 is TOO LATE.]

6) In any parish church (I'm not speaking of places like St. Peter's those are special cases) if you can't find the tabernacle within 5 seconds of entering, the place should be razed or put to rights. Whichever liturgical "team" approved the hide-and-go-seek tabernacle placement shall be immediately be put in the stockades so people can throw rotten fruit at them. And after that they will be stripped naked, tarred and feathered, and ridden out of town on a rail.

7. NO TERRYCLOTH bathtowel "things" for the lavabo. Ever. I mean it. It's T*A*C*K*Y. And I want BELLS, dammit. I don't give a flying hoot what Todd Brown and his little sychophants say.

8. Remove almost all "options" from the NO Mass. EP 2 or 3 should NEVER be used on a Sunday. Any priest who tries to "improve" by adding things shall be shot. Immediately. No questions. Not necessarily shoot to kill. A kneecapping will be adequate on the first offense. EP I must be used at least 2 Sundays out of 4.

9. EMs and Lectors (and deacons and servers for that matter) SHALL.KNOW.WHAT.IN.HELL.THEY.ARE.DOING or they don't get the gig. Anyone leaving an unconsummed chalice on the credence table at the side until after Mass like an unfinished cocktail will be summarily executed. Deacons need to learn the right way to purify vessels because too many don't have a clue. I've seen it, it's nasty.

10. Any cantor who uses the phrase "gathering song" will get ONE "warning shot" over his/her head. If they do it again. Tarred and feathered and sent over to the unitarian church where they are all aging hippies and don't know any better. And I'm with Mac re: a lot of the newer songs from the hippy days. 86 them or at least get rid of the ones that are questionable or outright heretical. The guitars need to go too. As a nice gesture IF Silent night is sung ON Christmas a single acoustic guitar may be used, otherwise forget it. I've always hated that song anyway.

11. The USCCB should stop prattling about economics. They know next to nothing. Ditto re: illegal aliens. We are NOT obligated to give a free ride for life to every Tom, Dick and Harry who makes it over the border. (There are exceptions for people who would be religiously persecuted, etc. But I'm talking about 99% of them.) Bernardin's "seemless garment" is a crock of crap, it just gives pro-aborts license to vote for liberals.

12. Shut down any purple palace seminaries. You know what I mean.

13. Every parish should have weekly benediction available at least once a week.

14. Frisbee Hosts. Gone. For. Good. Immediately. Instantly if not sooner. This one might even be number one.

This is more than 7, but I was on a roll and I might think up more. Gotta run. Project Runway's on.

And if you want to do this meme, go for it. It's too much fun to tag only seven people. So if you see yourself on my blogroll consider yourself tagged if you think it will be fun to do. Besides, notifying everyone they've been tagged is a pain in the kazoo.

What kind of Kid were you?

It's Sunday, and I haven't checked out blogspot in ages, so please don't mind the self-indulgence.

You Were an Outgoing Kid

When you were a kid, you had no problem expressing yourself.

There's a good chance you started talking early - and never stopped!

You had a lot of friends, and unlike most kids, you weren't shy around adults.

You were well adjusted and confident. You enjoyed speaking up and participating.

Which office Supply are you?

I can't resist stuff like this.

You Are a Calculator

No matter what someone tells you, you're likely to focus on facts and data.

You're a highly analytic person. You are only concerned with what you can know for sure.

You look at situations objectively, and you have no problem approaching problems from multiple angles.

You would make a good analyst or investment banker. You are confident enough to make tough calls and hard decisions.

Favorite Ornament

Okay, since I haven't been tagged on this yet (even though Mac tagged Fr. Owl and I asked him to tag me, and he didn't yet because he is sulking or doing something important like hearing confessions or planning to get away somewhere warm like Tahiti) I'm going to do it anyway, because I really, really want to do it, and if YOU want to do this please go ahead and tag everyone on planet earth because unless you are Jewish or some sort of Mohammedan you probably have a favorite Christmas Tree ornament. [Stephen, put yours up on flicker or something and link to the thing.] Let's have it!

I've had this ornament since I've been about 7. I can remember it when it was "new." And that was a long time ago. As I recall we got it in a box of "ordinary" ornaments, and "they" tend not to make things like this anymore. Not without spending more money than average anyway. This one is fairly thick glass and has sparkly "snow" on it. It's the ornament I always save to put in a "special" place. Last one on, first one off.

It has survived, by my count, about 15 moves. There are two songs which can make me cry. One is "Stars and Stripes Forever." [I'm a wreck on 4th of July, it hits so deep emotionally for me.] The other is Judy Garland singing "Have yourself a Merry Little Chirstmas" to Margaret O'Brien in "Meet Me In St. Louis." The family is moving and the younger sister is sad to be leaving all her friends.

I'm glad I got to live all the places I did and meet all the people I met and have wonderful experiences...but I can't deny the moment of separation from friends (and sometimes family) didn't take its toll.

Six things that make me happy

Esther tagged me.  State the obvious, then tag six more and let them know.

1. (I agree with her) Being Catholic.  Except for that Kleenex thing  - and by way of extension, some of the goofy things Paul said, did.   That was some fall off the horse.  ["no, you don't have to be circumcised to be Christian, except for you two dummies, who as adults need to be circumcised, because I need you to go into the temple over there and preach Christ, and God knows I can't find any Jews around here" (Paul, ya coulda done it yourself, instead of asking guys to get part of their pee-pees whacked off when they were already grown) and all that "women's heads must be covered  cultural crap" that we've been beaten over the head with for almost 2,000 years.  Paul,  take some valium, will ya?]

2. Being born a US citizen.  How lucky is that in the lottery of life?  Millions trying to get in and I had this just handed to me on the platter.  I didn't even have to come across with the pilgrims, but enough of my ancestors crossed - and some of them did within a hundred years after the pilgrims.   And the nice thing is when people take up citizenship here, they ARE "one of us."  I've known more than one person who was born in "country X" but still considers himself to be of "nationality Y" because they don't feel entirely part of where they were born.

3. Education.  I had all the formal education I wanted, and if I want more I can get it.

4. Theatre.  I'd rather sit in a dark theatre and watch people on stage, especially at "Musical comedy, the most glorious words in the English language ♪," I'd  even rather see bad stuff than sit at home and watch a sitcom or almost anything on TV.  To me there's always something to love or hate about it.  I do not love it enough, however, to want to be "properties manager" again.  Oh, I'll help MAKE properties. But not drive all around the fricken town finding the damn things.  I hate shopping too.  The most thankless task on earth next to ironing purificators.

5.  Rain.   The older I get the more I get like good queen Bess II in her love of it.  We so seldom get it here when it comes, it is a TREAT.  I love how everything is crystal clear after it, and if it's late afternoon, and the sun comes out, everything is infused with a golden tinged clarity that is unearthly.  It does after a rain here anyway.

6.  Family and friends.  Because.  They "knew you when" and loved you even before you got your cool.  They even love you when you're being a jerk.  Usually.

7. [I hate the number six.  Always have.  Even before the Exorcist.  And I like odd numbers more than evens.] DOGS.  DOGS RULE.  ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS ESPECIALLY RULE.

And now, the lucky six.

1. Tara (now that Stella is well.)

2. Phillip (so this time around he can tag Mac.  And Mac will probably tag Bara.  I hope.)

3. Swiss Miss (anyone who has a cabin with "bear issues" is interesting)

4. Angela. (Because her podcasts are so cool.)

5. Ukok  (because she's so creative)

6. Therese (She was neat enough to invite me down to Australia.  Some day I may take her up on it.  My folks had a blast down there, and it was the one place they were where I didn't get to go due to a work commitment, and I've been jealous ever since.)

I'd tag one of the polo team, but they are so "radio silence" on memes, though Mac (are ya listening?)  can sometimes twist the arm of his hermeneuticalness  enough to get him to come across with one.

Three things meme

Tara tagged me on this one. [And I agree with her Rob should start a blog too - we know him as rjw in our comboxes.]

Three jobs I have had in my life: cashier, sales, programmer

Three places I have lived: Emmaus, Pa., Nashua, New Hampshire, Roanoke, Va. (among many others!)

Three shows that I watch: Got me here. I generally don't make a point of watching any given TV shows...HOWEVER, that said I will watch the original Law and Order [I hate it without Lenny Briscoe], movie channels, and if there's one show I'm up to watch specifically, it's the new series of Project Runway. [I'm a sucker for that one.] So kill me, I'm a fan of Tim Gunn. To quote Santino "Tim Gunn, Tim Gunn, when he says your name you're done...." To quote Tim Gunn "Okay, but just be prepared to defend to Nina why [your model] has a big fat ass."]

Three places I have been : Florence, Italy, Hilo, Hawaii, Freeport, Maine (it's not the end of the earth, but you CAN see it from the rooftop of LL Bean - everyone should make at least one pilgrimage.)

Places I have been this week: My parish in Old Town, Escondido, library in Mission Valley.

Three people who email me regularly: No one, lately...what is this, "let's not write Karen back" month? Nobody sent me the memo!

Three of my favorite foods: perogies, lobster, prime rib

Three places I'd rather be right now: NYC, London, kickin' back in Lahaina, it's all good

Three friends I think will do this meme: hell's bells, hardly anyone's emailed!!! If you like this meme, go for it!

Three things I am looking forward to this year: losing weight (I have been but I won't if I start scarfing Carl's Jr. Prime Rib sandwiches like they were going out of style), making more money, going to the theatre, any theatre will do I just want to sit in the dark and watch other people pretend to be somebody else...normally, they'd throw a net over you for wanting to do something like that, but somehow the theatre beckons. [Are you reading this, Teresa S.? That's some nutty profession you want to get into! Quelle fun! Do the French have a word for "fun?" To judge by my 6th and 7th grade French teacher, they don't.]

(The photo is taken of our house in Nashua. A typical late spring day in '68 or so.)

What-where-when meme

...Mac tagged me on a cool meme.

1. President Kennedy's Assassination - 22 November 1963

I was in second grade at St. Francis of Assisi School, and lived in Allentown, Pa. I had seat on the aisle closest to the windows. Our nun, Sister Angela, had been called out of the room and was out for a few moments. She quickly came back in and said "President Kennedy's been shot." She ducked out in the hall again for a minute or two, and rejoined our class and said said "We don't know how bad it is. Fr. Walters [the pastor] was listening to the radio and heard the report, he was in Texas." I remember wondering "what was he doing in Texas?" None of us cried, but sat there in stunned silence.

We had a scheduled bathroom break, and as usually we filed upstairs it two by two in silence to the rest rooms. When we came back downstairs, we assembled in the chapel. [Which served as the parish church, as the new church building had not yet been completed.] We said prayers, and were informed that the president had died. Shortly afterwards, school was over for the day [I lived in Allentown, Pa. at the time.] I can remember walking home and turning on the news, and the coverage was the equivalent of 24/7 now on all networks. I remember that whole weekend like it was recent. He was killed on a Friday. The next morning I remember walking to the church to light a candle. It was the first news story I really followed. I'd watched the news before - but it was something that happened a child that young could grasp. I saved pictures from the paper. Had I been slightly older, I would have saved the articles too. I was cutting out pictures for a scrapbook which I'd made, and when I saw Jack Ruby shot. I remember calling out to my mom, who was in the kitchen to tell her what had happened. I have to say I was glad at the time that Oswald had been shot. I did feel sorry though for Marina Oswald and her kids, and Officer Tippett's family, I always wonder what happened to his wife and children. The only time I cried was the night of the assassination, as I was going to bed and thought about Caroline (who was a year younger than me) - it made me feel awful that her dad was killed like that. Jackie Kennedy was considered heroically stoic and dignified throughout. I have to say that during the Kennedy Administration you NEVER heard about "Camelot" -- that was all propagated by Theodore White AFTER the assassination. You'll find NO reference to it prior to the assassination.

2. England's World Cup Semi Final v Germany - 4 July 1990

Blissfully unaware. I was having a good summer. I'd returned from vacation in the south of France in May of that year ... and was working on documenting and straightening out the batch files for the computer jobs that ran overnight which produced the work plans for Tomahawk missile factory floor assembly at General Dynamics. Good thing too, because it came in damn useful in August that year - as that's when Kuwait was invaded.

3. Margaret Thatcher's resignation - 22 November 1990

I can remember watching the news reports with my mom. We'd thought it was tacky the way the "old boy network" stabbed her in the back when she was out of the country on business. 10 John Majors weren't worth one of the Iron Lady. [Sorry Stephen!!!]

4. Princess Diana's death - 31 August 1997

It was late afternoon and I was going to a baseball game that night. I had been coming out of Old Town onto highway 8 and I flipped on the radio that night and heard the initial reports. She'd been taken to the hospital but had not yet died. The report said there were at least two deaths and two badly injured, including her. When I went to the game that night, many people had had their radios (and quite a few people normally took to the games to listen to the commentary. You could literally SEE the news of her death pass in waves through the stands. When we got home from the game that night, the TV cameras were trained on the removal of the Mercedes from the tunnel. I wrote to an English friend of mine about it, and it turned out I was the one who informed him of what had happened. Because it happened in the wee hours local time, many of us in the US knew about it before those in the UK and elsewhere. My friend, Tim, had not yet flipped on his radio before he'd read his email. Every now and again I see one of the princes photographed riding in a car without a seatbelt and I want to scream "put your seatbelt on, you MORON!"

5. Attack on the twin towers - 11 September 2001

I must have been one of the last people in North America to know. My father had died on Sept 8 in Pennsylvania, so I'd come back east for the funeral. I'd flown out on Monday the 10th and was staying with my aunt and uncle the night before and was to be "passed on" to my dad's side of the family around noonish that day for the drive up to the coal region. About an hour away. I'd had a nice sleep in and woke up about 8:25, and gone down to greet my aunt and catch up on family news...my aunt had had the TV/Radio on, but had turned it off when I came down. We chatted until shortly after 11 eastern time. We'd then put my suitcase in the car to go meet my dad's sister and her husband. I was seated in the car, when a neighbor from across the street had hailed my aunt. She was gone for a good 5-10 minutes and I was starting to get antsy, when my aunt told me "the twin towers have been hit and destroy, the Pentagon's hit, and there was a plane crash in Pa." And I said "Who are at war with - they're going to get it." I did not cry at the time, I was stunned and angry, and when I'm stunned and angry I don't cry. I *almost* shed a few tears at the 21 gun salute my dad received, but not quite. I was glad my dad didn't have to live through that time, as ill as he'd been. For two months until we retaliated I woke up angry. I have never felt like that before. About that same time I was fussing around with photograph doing up albums, and had come across a photo one of my uncles had taken in the NY harbor when he'd taken my young cousins to see the Statue of Liberty. He'd caught a photo of my cousin perfectly framed with the twin towers in the background. And I finally cried for about 10 minutes.

6. The election of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger to the papacy - 19 April 2005

I'd walked down to a liquor/deli shop for lunch. They had a nice sidewalk eating area, with television. As I walked into order my usual Italian sub sandwich, the news was showing the crowds cheering the announcement that a pope had been elected. I said to the counterman "who's the new pope?" He said "I don't know ... some German name..." abd I said "Ratzinger?" And he said "yes, that's it!" So by pure serendipity I got to see and hear his first address as pope to the public. I can remember thinking "Benedict XVI huh?" Yeah, like he thought of THAT on the spor of the moment. Just once it would be nice to have an unconventional name in modern times. I await "Pope Bubba." Digi, put the word in your boy's ear.

This was a fun meme, so if it strikes your fancy, feel free.

Go ahead and use these

Mac had tagged me on a meme re: what picture I would use for my holy card, should I make it to saint, and of what cause(s) I wanted to be patroness. On a previous blog entry early last month I mentioned that in case I was to be given this honor that I wanted my first communion picture to be used.

But then saints usually have more than one "holy card" possibility, so for that "all American girl" look, I offer my senior year book picture.

And for the mature woman card I'll pick my profile picture.

And I want to be patron saint of people whose patron saints are overworked and too busy to get to whatever it is that they need help with (St. Anthony too busy finding car keys to bother with helping you find your sanity? Let me be your "go to" gal.) Also patron saint of altar servers particularly "difficult kids" whose parents wondered if their kid could "focus" enough, and of girls whose mothers didn't want them to serve Mass, and dog lovers (my *sign* will be an English springer spaniel - if St. Therese of Lisieux could send a shower of roses, I can send spaniels), and patron saint of theatre GOERS (so if you need to get those house seats opened up last minute just for you, ask me!)

And of course I want to be patron saint of procrastinators. I don't think anyone's gotten around to doing that yet. I should be good at it, being a world class procrastinator.

Mac wanted me to tag seven and I should get around to tagging you guys, if everyone else hasn't gotten around to tagging you already.

I tag: Esther, Fr. John Boyle, Fr. Sean Finnegan, Digihairshirt, Ukok, Ebeth, and Jackie. (and of course if you have a burning desire to do this one, please do so and let me know in the combox.)

Summertime Meme

1.(a) When does summer start for you? (b) When does it end?

a) when it stays dark past 7.
b) mentally, after fire season is over and out here that can be until late October. OR until the temps dip consistently below 60F at night. But definitely by Halloween, come inferno or not.

2.(a) Favorite Food(s) to cook on a grill:

BBQ beef ribs, steak, grilled corn on the cob.

2.(b) any recipe you'd like to share?

Macaroni Salad:
Get bag of elbow macaroni. DO NOT get the "big" elbow macaroni, do not get the "small" elbow macaroni, get the kind that when done is about "xxxxxx" <-- this long. If you use the wrong size macaroni, you WILL screw this up. Get a bunch of hard boiled eggs. At least 6, 8 is better. Chop them up, but not too fine....yolks and all. Get a bunch of diced celery (do NOT skip this) about 3-4 stalks should be good. Fry up a MESS of bacon, very crisp. Yes, use the whole damn package, or nearly so...you know good and well you will eat some of it when you're frying it up. Crumble up the bacon. (DO NOT SKIP THIS) Now, once you've got all this mix with REAL mayonnaise, not FAKE mayonnaise or "lite" mayonnaise, if you're going to do that, don't even BOTHER. [If you can't take the calories don't make it!!] Now...how much mayonnaise is tricky - start with a little, and gradually add so that the whole thing is nicely held together with mayonnaise, neither a mayonnaise bath or stingy so it doesn't form a proper colloidal dispersion. Do your best to have an even distribution of ingredients. (Duh) Sprinkle top with paprika if desired. This next part is KEY -- chill for at least one hour, preferably even 2-3 before serving. This salad is not for calorie wusses. Go munch lettuce if you want something like that, but don't say I didn't warn you that you will end up looking like a manatee if you go the romaine lettuce route. My mom and aunts always made this macaroni salad and we NEVER had any left over, you were lucky not to get clawed fighting over it. It's even better the next day.

3. Favorite summertime smell: Beach towel and clothing taken to the beach. The faint smell of salt water, sun and suntan lotion is unbeatable, and if you're careful with that stuff can last well into the fall.

4.(a) Where was your last summer vacation? Theatre trips to Wichita and Sacramento.

4(b) Where did you go (or what did you do) on your favorite summer vacation?

Month long Grand tour of Europe with my best friend from college and her older sister after my senior year in 1978. We hit Ireland, England, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France. We had a blast. I did the whole thing on roughly two grand, and that included 1st class Eurail pass for 3 weeks.

5. Favorite summertime dessert?

Watermelon.

6(a). Favorite summer sport? Baseball.

6(b)Why? It's a metaphor for America. It's a head game as much as a physical game. All good Americans have played it, or it's first cousin, softball. There's no "hiding" either you perform well or you don't. There is no such thing as a "friendly" game of softball. It's the perfect game to listen to on the radio. And there's nothing like "stealing home." I did that once when I was 13 and it was one of the coolest things ever. :-D

7.(a) Do you tan easily? Not particularly, though I can if I'm careful. I usually burn a bit before tanning, but I can tan. I don't go too dark. I don't want to screw up my skin and get leathery. But I don't want to be blinding white either.

(b)Favorite suntan lotion?

Hawaiian Tropical Blend if I have money, Coppertone if I don't.

8. What do you like best about summer?

Everything's more relaxed.

9. What do you hate about summer?

It goes by so quickly now. When I was a kid, summer went on forever. I pity kids with short summer vacations or who really have no time to get started with a hobby or try something totally different. There's nothing wrong with just plain old "hanging out."

10. Do you like theme parks? What's your favorite ride?

Yes. Disneyland's Splash Mountain. I was sorry that last drop scared my mom to death, could never get her to go on it, though I know she would have loved the rest of the ride. (pretty good vid linked to, but I missed the "Beeeeesssssss.")

11. Favorite Summertime movie(s)?

Jaws. I like the whole thing. I especially like the scene where Robert Shaw describes what happened when the USS Indianapolis went down. Superb piece of acting. And, guilty pleasure one summer Keanu Reeves in Speed. Totally hokey, but there was something about that line "I can't believe you SHOT me" that just killed me! American Graffiti. The sound track alone is killer and it's a classic.

12. Favorite Summertime Book(s)?

Light reading. Every year I used to read Jim Bouton's Ball Four and/or other baseball books. And in my teens I always reread Gone with the Wind without fail.

13. Favorite picnic spot?

Can't say I personally picnic much, if I do it's usually a park near the beach...on a WEEKDAY!

14. Footwear?

Sneakers or barefoot.

15. Favorite Summer flower?

Double delight roses. Mostly white with the edges red. Very fragrant.

16. Favorite summer song(s).

Beach Boys, Jan & Dean. That stuff never gets old. The Beatles' Sargeant Pepper Album.

17. Things you used to do, and miss in the summer:

Miniature Golf, Drive in movies, running outside to get Mr. Softee Ice cream from the guy who used to drive around when I was a kid, just as the sun was going down. I'll have a vanilla cone, please.

18. Summer poem?

Casey at the Bat.

10 things I'd like to see in action

I was tagged by Kit on this one:

1. A certain "biology professor" in Minnesota and his entire family converted to the Catholic faith. Particularly his children, whom he has led astray.

2. To attended Fr. Ray Blake's installation as bishop.

3. An English Springer Spaniel springing into my future.

4. Phillip's Isle of Wight, just once before I die. Even though I gather he's been itching to get back to the mainland.

5. Obama admit he is a flaming socialist, Marxist wannabe. And this year may there be NO "blue states."

6. Fr. Erik vanquish those skateboard creeps that make his life a living hell. [Uh, Fr., you DID turn into that cranky "old man" next door. Don't ever change back from not being one.]

7. Jimmy Brennan in anything on stage. [Yo, Tinochky, how's your summer been going?]

8. A big-ass(TMDavidLetterman) winning lottery ticket in my hand, cashed in, and in the bank.

9. To serve Mass for the Sainted Fr. S. in the EF form. We can do it at his house so some of you people won't trip. I'm working on memorizing all the Latin responses. Though he's not a particularly big advocate of that form for Joe/Jane Sixpack (having said that style of Mass for 10 years and noticing that the average Joe/Jane Sixpack was clueless in really knowing/following the same) -- he is NOT exactly enamored of our wet behind the ears clueless bishop informing EVERYONE that they will have to be examined to see if they are "competent." [Uh, Bishop Sparky, I think the fact that you do have some priests in the diocese who said Mass this way for a number of years, would pretty well prove they are "competent."]

10. The return of regular Benediction in ALL Catholic churches. Ditto Corpus Christi processions, May Crownings, Holy Hours etc. "Centering prayer" and its cousins can take a hike.

And please, if you like this meme, consider yourself tagged.

That and the fact he was mean and unjust to his supply priest of the last 30 years. But let me not "go there." [ask me sometime when I need to elevate my blood pressure to a gratifying apoplectic level.]

1st Things Meme

Esther tagged me on this one. I'm going to cheat a little and count "today" as Thursday rather than Friday (which it technically is in my time zone) --- because if I took it literally, I didn't get zip done in the 8 minutes or so it's been Friday here ... as I still haven't gone to bed yet, but was just about to turn in.

Just write down what you did first today…

* The first thing I thought today: “God, is it 4:10 already?” [I drove a friend to the airport this morning and we left at 4:45 ... at least the actual drive was only about 10 minutes, because she lives pretty close to the airport. It wasn't quite daylight in the swamp when we left, but it was by the time I stopped for "breakfast."]
* The first thing I ate today: Three doughnuts. The shop was on the way back from the airport, and since I was up so early and "virtuous" I was entitled. For the record: one glazed, one custard filled topped with chocolate icing, and a strawberry cruller. PLUS Anything eaten before 6 a.m. has NO calories. See my last year's calorie helper post for more diet tips.
* The first thing I drank today: Hanson's diet ginger ale. As God is my witness it is almost a dead ringer for Idris Ginger Beer.
* The first thing I said today: "Oh #$%!"
* The first action I did today: Ignored the time for 10 minutes before I rolled out of bed to put my contacts in.
* The first thing I read today: A little of Mike Meyers CompTIA A+ Certification Guide...just as I crawled back into bed about 5:30 and went back to sleep.
* The first item of clothing: Shorts (undies were already on)
* The first person I spoke to today: My friend Mary "why the hell is your flight so early?" Actually, I don't remember the first thing I said. It was probably a grunt. [;-P]
* The first chore I did today: Washed dish after lunch.
* The first blog I visited today: Mine! I gotta see if anyone commented. Then Fr. Blake's. I wanted see if he'd been tapped for bishop or something.

I tag anyone who wants to play.

(Maybe it's just me, but the tail section of Alaska Airline's planes always make me wonder if they used Charles Manson for the model....)

More Stuff about me you probably don't want to know

But what the hey.... [ I saw this one over at UKOK so hat tip to her.]

What time is your alarm clock set to? Today it was set to 6:49 - I don't normally get up that early but I did today.

What is the first thing you notice about the opposite sex? Face. Particularly the eyes. I like it if they "dance."

Do you think people talk about you behind your back? Dunno. I don't give a flip if they do or not. As long as what they say *isn't* the truth.

What movie do you know every line to? Ah....so many....Sound of Music, the Godfather I & II, Gone with the Wind...Patton....Holiday Inn

What is your favorite movie? Surprisingly ;-D the above ones.

Is anyone in love with you? God, if they are I wish they'd tell me.

Do you eat breakfast daily? Not usually, though I'm trying to change that pattern as I find I "Graze" less during the day when I do. Can't stand milk at all though, and cereal is the pits. I like either fruit and whatever or the classic eggs. I either have an egg-in-the-nest, or eggs scrambled up with jack or mozarella cheese and red onions and a little salt and pepper. Bacon is the bomb, but I've been laying off. I like the Danish butter, but lately the Irish cows who produce the Kerrygold Butter are my bestest friends. Would someone in Ireland please kiss those cows for me? I'm still loyal to my California cows for my cheese. But girls, your Irish cousins eat better grass than you do. [Chris, I am STOKED ... someone finally put up the Cow video we only saw the once!]

Do you sleep on your side, stomach or back? Usually side.

Who was the last person to make you mad? He shall go nameless, but he wears mostly black. And it isn't the sainted one.

Are you a lover or a fighter? Both

Are you a morning or evening person? Queen of the Night

Are you a cuddler? Yes, but don't tell anyone, you'll blow my cover.

Are you a perfectionist? About some things. My CD collection is in alphabetic order. I don't give a darn if I wear a different gray T-shirt every day of the week...and then not gray for a month, switching to red. I'm not a perfectionist about everything because frankly some things aren't worth taking the time to do spectacularly well. There's only so much time and I'd be more insufferable than I am if I was.

Have you ever written a poem? Yeah. But don't tell.

Do you have more guy or girl friends? A few more girl friends than guy friends, but I'm very selective about my women friends. IF they show any signs of not being able to talk about anything other than men they're borrrrringgggggg.... And my guy friends are all good talkers. Forget the "strong silent type." I want a guy who can quote Shakespeare and talk baseball statistics and one who can argue with me. ALL of the people I count as friends tend to be good at more than one thing. We don't have to have everything in common, but at least one interest. Usually we have a few interests in common. I tend to keep my friends for a long, long time. I can pretty much get along with most anyone though, partly a function of my personality, partly as a function of being an "only" [if you want friends, you don't have built in ones!], and partly from having moved around a lot as a kid.

How many tickets have you gotten? Not any for 13 years...and I got THREE in ***king New ***king Jersey within 24 hours. Well, technically I got two and one "warning." The last one stopped me when I was going 80. He said "what are you doing?" And I said "Trying to get the hell out of New Jersey." Got 2 when I was a teen, the California rolling stop variety. Oh, and one of those as an adult. Have never been stopped for speeding in Cali on the highway. Not once. Ever. I think that's the life time count unless I blocked some out.

Piercings? In each ear. I'm not a "girly-girl" but I am a girl, and not a hippy girl, so I don't have 40. Funny story about that. When I was twenty my best friend from college and I were in a mall. I was up for the weekend visiting her house (and nice enough NOT to bring my laundry as Phylis had brought all *her* laundry.) I looked at a May Company sign that said "free ear piercing today if you buy a pair of earrings." So I turned to Phylis and said "Hey, I've been wanting to do that." She said "me too...you first." So I did thinking "it can't be too bad, I'm the girl that can practically break an arm falling down and not cry and everyone says 'what a great girl, no tears'." So I go first. The lady marked the ears then went in for the kill. "****-**-**-tears!!!!" I thought...but I showed NO emotion, knowing if I did, then Phylis would be too chicken to follow through. So I then smiled and lied "nothing to it." The lady did the other one and I sucked it up and beamed. Phylis got in the chair ... and WHAM.... She looked at me and good Baptist girl she was said "daaammmmn you!!!" Phylis didn't mind swearing if she was *quoting* someone else...but that was one of the few times she swore of her own accord. "Why didn't you TELL me?" "because I knew you'd chicken out if I showed any pain." "damn right I would have." Her mother howled when she heard about it. "back in my day we used Ice cubes and needles."

Do you have a tattoo? No. And if I did I probably wouldn't tell you. Some time ago there was a young woman at my workplace who bent over and in the gap between her shirt and top of low slung jeans was in letters bigger than life "Doggy Style." Sheesh. WAYYYYY too much information. I felt like slapping her. "WTF were you thinking?" I saw another girl with flowers basically growing out of her butt. "Honey," I thought "you may think that's cute now when you're nineteen and weigh 115 pounds, but just wait for middle aged spread. It will look like your insides exploded." What are young girls thinking today? A butterfly on the ankle isn't a particularly good idea. The only tattoos that look "good to me" are American Eagles on service men's arms. Classic. But a battleship on a woman's chest doesn't look good. [Well, maybe to a GUY it would....I guess "twin 40s" would take on a different meaning.]

Are you patient? Get real! Actually, with children, and mentally disabled I am extremely patient. ... God help the adult I think is stupid if they can help not being stupid... I'm not talking about ignorant ... everyone is ignorant about some things ... I'm talking about "was out for a smoke when the good Lord handed out common sense."

Do you miss anyone right now? You bet. My mother, in particular. There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss her.

Tea or coffee? Tea. Iced or hot. Keep the milk away, and I need my own cane field. I don't like hot coffee at all. The only coffee I like at all is that stuff they put caramel or hazelnut in and freeze the hell out of and put a half pound of sugar in. I don't get it very often as it would break the bank. A cocaine habit would be cheaper.

Regularly burn incense? Are you kidding, me? That's not a "home" thing.... although I wish we used it every Sunday at Mass like the eastern rite does.

Ever been in love? IF I tell I wouldn't be a woman of mystery then, would I?

Best room for a fireplace? Den

What do you do when you’re sad or upset? Sad? Watch a movie or play music I like. Upset? Bitch and moan.

Afraid of heights? Nope. But when I'm up high I like an airplane around me.

Can you change the oil in your car? No!

Favorite flower? Double delight Rose. White petals with red edges. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

Favorite hangout? Home!

Middle name? Ann [My confirmation name is Therese, and I've used that too ever since I got it. It's on my Social Security card too. Ditto passport, and all the important stuff.]

Most romantic sounding language? English. Really. I don't know why other women find men speaking French sexy. To me the average Frenchman sounds "gay, gay, Liberace gay." Really. They better have a deep studly voice for that thought not to even cross my mind. Ditto Spanish. Thorry guyths. You all sound so "exthitable." No wonder you lose wars. HOWEVER, for some reason Italian guys speaking Italian just sounds "fun" and relaxed and stylish. I still love the sound of English best. I also like the sound of German and Russian. With Chinese and other Asian languages? I think they really just read each other's minds. Oh. One type of English accent that drives me crazy is anyone from the Indian subcontinent speaking English. Sorry guys. IF you want to sing-song, do it in some romance language.

Ever been overseas? Yeah. 7 times to Yurrup. The first time when I was 17. Ireland, England, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican City, Monaco, France. I've also been to TJ too many times to count just across the border, but not in a couple years. I can only use so many boxes of chewing gum and drink so many tequillas. And I was to Expo '67 in Montreal when I wasn't quite 11. And I've been to Hawaii 8 or 9 times. I lost track. Kinda. I guess that counts as "overseas" because I had to go "overseas" to get there. Well, an ocean anyway. Oahu, Maui, Kauai, the Big Island and Molokai.

7 things about Meeeeeee

Marie Therese over at Aussie Coffee Shop tagged me on this one.

1. I have to burn slightly before I tan. I forgot the "slightly" part last week.

2. One of life's unsolved mysteries for me is: "Why do the British have their bathtub sides so damn high? Are they trying to kill off their Old Age Pensioners?" If you know, let me know.

3. I can't wear yellow. I've tried. Failed. Every. Single. Time. Why do I bother? Slow learner.

4. I have a harmonica. I play it. Can I play tunes on it? No. Why do I like to fool around with it? Because harmonicas sound cool. It's keyed in "G." It's a good one too. Hohner.

5. I'm always disappointed if icing on a cake is whipped cream instead of butter creme frosting. I always think "what were you thinking?!" but I'm too polite to say so.

6. I had a year of tap when I was 10. Should have continued, 'cuz I was pretty good! Everybody said. For real. We moved and I had a lot of "Extras" around that time. Scouts, music, swimming, etc. So I never had bothered to sign up after we moved. My loss!

7. If it's a choice of "odds or evens" I always pick odds.

I tag anyone who feels like playing. And I still have another meme to do that I was tagged with back in early April, so no, I haven't forgotten.
