Huzzah for the 2nd Amendment.

"WASHINGTON (AP) - Silent on central questions of gun control for two centuries, the Supreme Court found its voice Thursday in a decision affirming the right to have guns for self-defense in the home and addressing a constitutional riddle almost as old as the republic over what it means to say the people may keep and bear arms."

Full story here.

Thank you George W. Bush especially for Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito. I'd also like to thank Justice Kennedy for "finding his set", Justices Thomas for being consistent and Justice Scalia for booting it home for the winning team. As per usual, Breyer, Ginsburg, Stevens, and that total loser, Souter, proved out to be gun grabber wannabes.

Predictably, liberal pantywaists like Chicago's Richard Daley and DC Mayor are limp hand waving already. Count on FEWER deaths from gun crime in those cities next year. Ditto NYC.

Run, scumbags, run....you won't know who's packin' heat in the house. Your time is up.

Did someone stand behind Justice Kennedy with a big fat board or what? He's been on the wrong side of the issue so much lately it's frightening. I thought he'd pussy boy out.

Crime goes down when folks are packing. Makes the scum think twice before robbing, raping, or getting rowdy.

An armed society is a polite society! "hold it right there, sparky!" I'm pleased as punch that Justice Kennedy "got religion" on this one.

Was it you Karen who did an interesting post some time ago showing how gun crime is far worse where guns are illegal?
Gun crime is increasing around where I live. Of couse guns are illegal here. Knife crime is also pretty big in these parts.
We're such lovely people. *sigh*

Well, there's a map I have somewhere which gave the gun crime rates correlated with states as to how strict the gun laws are. The more strict the MORE gun crime.

In the case in question just decided, DC had a total ban on owning handguns. Guess which part of the US has the highest rate of handgun crime? If you said "DC" give yourself a kewpie doll.

In Vermont, for instance there is no permit required to carry a concealed handgun -- what state is lowest in gun crime? Yeah....Vermont.
[And there's a lot of liberal lunatics up there who also agree with relaxed gun laws, Ben and Jerry's cows are packin' too.]

I'll see if I can find and post.

Pretty much, if you're NOT a drug dealer in a ghetto neighborhood, you're going to be pretty safe. This is not to say random crime doesn't happen -- like that massacre of Va. Students a while back....BUT notably in that instance "do-gooders" in the state had passed a law trying to make "safe zones" with "no guns allowed" in this case on that campus. Well, gee, just hang a sign why don't you that says "go ahead and shoot up the place, the law abiding aren't carrying here." Good intentions, bad outcome. Criminals don't pay attention to the law anyway.

I do know that here it is almost unheard of for a burglar to break into someone's house when the person is at home.

Since Australia started grabbing guns, the gun crime rate also went up there.

In Switzerland they require people to keep guns and ammo in the home....low gun crime rate.

When I was little, in the 50s and 60s I lived in Pennsylvania, and it's a big hunting state, along with Michigan it had the highest per capita hunting licenses in the country. Every family I knew had an unlocked gun cabinet. Somewhere along the time you learned not to stick your hand in the fire and stand upright you also knew the gun cabinet was off limits. It was absorbed through osmosis. It would have been unthinkable for you to shoot up a classroom if you got "picked on" or a bad grade or someone looked at you the wrong way. Many youngsters were taught by their parents (especially the dad) how to shoot straight. Dad taught me when I was about 12 or so, and it was definitely a father/son hunting/bonding thing from when most boys are about 10-14 depending on when the parent thinks the youngster is ready. These days it's not uncommon for a father to take his daughter out hunting too in states with a hunting tradition.

But it's really not about "hunting rights" at all so much as the right to defend yourself in your own home.

I think it's noteworthy that when dictators come to power the first thing they do is seize the guns of the people.

:-D The US Revolution got triggered when the British tried to seize the stored ammo at Lexington and Concord. If not for that you folks might be visiting Miami without a passport now. ;-D

I was going to comment on Souter, but you already did in your post. He's a ten-pound weakling type that does something then runs and hides behind his mom (in this case his robes). Wasn't there something awhile back involving him and eminent domain?

Oh, totally..Souter was THE WORST disaster George Herbert Walker Bush inflicted on us. Damn, had he had HALF the calibur of man his son did, we'd be in good shape now...now it's always up to that idiot Kennedy, who depending on mood swings and his time of the month either has his brass pair or doesn't depending if it's the time of the month they shriveled up, dropped off and roll behind the couch...occasionally to be retrieved, but not often enough for my liking.

Absolutely right about him and eminent domain. People in his area are trying to get HIS property rezoned to grab it from his miserable carcass. I hope eventually they succeed so he can see his own private property virtually seized to give to another private party. It would serve him right. Sorry piece of work. If horsewhipping were still in fashion he would be a prime candidate.
